Last night, the Spanish football team made history by winning its third back-to-back major competition: Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and now Euro 2012.
Two of the team’s players are native to Seville (well, the province) – Sergio Ramos and Jesus Navas. Ramos, in fact, hails from my husband’s home town – the unlovely conurbation of Camas, best known for the factory which supplies drain covers to various cities around Spain. Nice.
After Spain gave Italy a sound beating – 4-0 is the most definitive victory ever in the European Championship (one of many records broken last night) – Sevillanos poured onto the streets to celebrate. Due to poor timing and recalcitrant children, I missed the big moments in Puerta Jerez and the Setas, but managed to catch a few snaps around Avenida San Fernando and the Alameda.
While my long-suffering husband stayed in the double-parked car with two by-then-sleeping children (how terrible a mother am I?), I dashed around like a mad woman snapping the sea of yellow and red which washed over the streets of Seville last night.
Some of these photos were taken out of the window of a moving car, so apologies for the poor quality. What they lack in technical prowess, however, I hope they make up for in atmosphere – the people’s expressions of delight and pride.
Great pictures and well done Spain – they deserve some good fortune 😉
Thanks – telling me! Lots of wry jokes on Twitter at the time about whether things would be magically improve the next day (they didn’t). BTW a really good friend of mine has just moved to BCN (strict veggie), so I will be visiting her soon – my first ever trip to the city!!
Wow – take here to my friend Alfredo’s vegetarian restaurant – Sesamo – he’s a great chef. Otherwise, there are lots of good Barcelona restaurants on my blog and of course there are wonderful things to do which don’t involve food 😉
Great, thanks – have passed on the recommendation. She started her Catalan classes the day after arriving!!!
Catalan on day 2 – that’s impressive, she must be staying 😉
Love it. The photos capture the atmosphere perfectly – blur and all. You can almost even hear the NOISE!!! (That might be my ears still ringing from last night though!)
Thanks – it was fun to photograph. Couldn’t have missed it, even with sleeping kids in the car!!That’s dedication for you!!
Reblogged this on The Hotel Los Bérchules Blog.
Brilliant! There were some sore heads this morning when I dropped Bibsey off at the childminders!
I bet – the whole country was bleary-eyed!!
Brilliant. Well done Spain. What an amazing night to experience.
It was! It will happen in England too… sometime…
