Never goes out of fashion – taking a turn around the recinto (fairground) in a carriage.

Every April, after Feria here in Seville has finished and we’re all still recovering from too many late nights and stonking rebujito-fuelled hangovers, I promise myself that next year, like a good Sevillana, I will organise my outfit well in advance: check my dress is cleaned and pressed; shoes are en condiciones (the last pair collapsed after the rigours of Feria 2014); and maybe even get some new earrings – clip-ons are tricky to find, as I stopped used pierced earrings when my small children thought it was fun to yank the pretty shiny things hanging from Mummy’s ears. Ow.

What happened last week as I prepared for the long-awaited rendezvous with my pandi (girl gang)? I discovered that The Dress, which barely fits (too many cakes and puds), still had last year’s manzanilla on its volantes (never made it to the drycleaners); no earrings; and shockingly uncomfortable cheapo espadrille sandals – a last-minute panic purchase. #feriafashionfail

None of which stopped me from going, naturally, and having a bloody good time. Evidence is limited to my personal Facebook and Instagram accounts (@fififlores).

In this post you can see photos of what the fashion-forward feriantes wore this year. Every year I try to spot the new trends at the Feria – colours, prints, accessories. Sevillana women spend months planning their outfits, coordinating their trajes de gitana (flamenco dresses) with fringed shawl (manton), all-important flower worn in the hair, and jewellery.

A bit of 1970s retro glam – love the gold belt.

Among the non-traje de gitana wearers, jumpsuits were popular.

Not all women wear dresses; this frilly shirt and spotty skirt combo was complemented by a coordinating striped belt…

and a pretty red bow at the back.

These amazona jackets are usually in sombre grey, blue or black, or pale blue or pink. A flash of fuschia livens up the horsey set.

Flowers with different colours and types of blooms – like a posy in your barnet – were big this year.

Complicated hair styles involving plaits, not unlike horses’ tails, were also popular.

Low backs were de moda too – with optional tattoo. Love the applique flower detail.
